Hugging the coast just south of the city of Dzhugba, Chernigov is a new installation constructed by the Earth Union to provide naval and shipping support in the far east of the Black Sea, and assumes the role of several old Human Reform League-era bases that have been closed down due to their antiquity and irrelevance in the Union’s strategic realignment of military forces. The Chernigov base provides an important transportation and logistical center for military hardware and forces moving through Asia Minor towards the Middle East and other Union “frontier” territories.

Chernigov, like many Union installations, offers a large faculty for aircraft and mobile suits as well as surface ships, with a large runway extending out into the Black Sea on reclaimed land. Dock space was created by dredging and excavation of the coast on either side, making for a fork-shaped concourse with the airstrip acting as the middle tine. Defenses are hidden on retractable mounts usually stored below the surface on the outer edges of the base’s north and south perimeter as well as down the middle of the airfield to guarantee overlapping coverage and minimal blind spots. Defense coordination is carried out from the U-shaped command center to the south of the airfield, while mobile suit hangars are below ground – elevators and launch shafts allow garrisoned units to be deployed directly to the runway in the event of a security breach.
