Al-Zawia is a major shipping terminus along Bar-Kemal’s westward supply lines, and the main point of transfer to tanker vessels in the Mediterranean as the largest of these ships cannot easily make use of the major ports at Suez due to the shallower seafloor as a result of Earth’s climatic instability in previous decades.
Situated about twenty miles to the east of the old city of Tripoli, Al-Zawia is focused around a very large artificially excavated harbor with full deep-water capability – a pair of concrete “arms” form breakers to maintain placid conditions within harbor’s interior, while a metallic mesh screen is pulled across the point of entry hydraulically to keep out unwanted objects above or below the water. The base proper contains a bewildering number of compression and storage tanks for refined oil, looking like a forest of white cylinders from a distance, in addition to the giant refinery structures that occupy the outer areas. Al-Zawia’s perimeter is very well fortified to act as a strong-point of Bar-Kemal’s transit and shipping ports in Libya, with the vast majority of the defenses pointed inland to prevent attacks by al-Ghazi rebels and other groups of brigands operating out of the desert. The breakers and sea wall forms the other perimeter towards the Mediterranean, but only has a handful of machine gun emplacements for defense against small craft – the Assad Babil platform offshore is expected to provide a suitable buttress against enemy forces that have slipped into the sea.
While appearing as an imposing industrial fortress from the exterior – a slope-walled castle abutting the sea visible for miles – Al-Zawia is also a major employer for the local communities, and the close proximity to Tripoli makes it an attractive location among Bar-Kemal’s security forces compared to some of the more far-flung operations.
