Positioned in the north of the Baie de Brest, Recouvrance is a main Earth Union navy base constructed in the late UC 230s to consolidate several older and relatively small Earth Sphere Alliance installations along the coast of France. Compared to many other Union installations, Recouvrance is relatively unconventional as a question of geography more than anything else.
Because of the limited amount of space available east of the Anse de Maison Blanche, Recouvrance can be well described as “compact”. With only about a mile and a half of contiguous harbor space available, much of the installation is built “up” rather than “out”. The entire installation is constructed as several extremely large buildings that, while blocky and squat in shape, still tower high above the picturesque city of Brest. The Union naval port is segmented by artificial jetties on either side, allowing a modest increase in the number of ships that can be moored there while still allowing plenty of room for vessels to turn around. In addition to lining up like sardines in the docks next to the structures, there are several inlets that actually permit ships to enter into massive maintenance bays and drydocks below one of the main tower blocks, quietly hiding them from public view as well.
The gargantuan buildings are constructed to be both functional as administrative and logistical centers as well as a well-protected military garrison. The main blocks are assembled from great concrete monoliths that have had sheets of GN particle-impregnated armor placed on their exteriors, making for a very sturdy structure that also has a certain “sheen” to it when struck by the sun. Overhead transportation bridges link the blocks together, and although wide enough to allow mobile suits to move across they may also be retracted below ground in the event of an attack. Meanwhile, the upper floors of every tower are literally festooned with defenses in heavily armored turrets, which are ordinarily disguised as oversize air conditioning and ventilation structures to provide for a less-threatening appearance. In addition to their great altitude, the buildings also extend to a significant depth as well – the base’s command center is placed several floors below the largest block, making it exceptionally hard to get at.
The shimmering monolithic blocks are, if nothing else, a potent statement on the presence of the Earth Union in Europe, and can easily be seen from any point around the bay – the juxtaposition of the large and modern megastructures with some of the city’s more ancient architecture, such as the Château de Brest castle just across the Penfeld river from the towering installation, creates for a lively commentary on the scope and scale of the Union’s military (and industrial) capability.
