Special: Occupants at this base may move to Gibraltar in Western Europe as part of a movement without using any AP. Note that the Earth Union must allow the occupant to pass through Gibraltar before granting use of the tunnel.

The original southern terminus of the Strait Tunnel linking Spain and Morocco, with its historic fortress and Atlantic Federation-devised checkpoint, was totally destroyed by anti-Federation terrorists circa UC 217. The Strait Tunnel remained inoperable with its southern end collapsed until the mid-230s when Bar-Kemal re-opened the portal as a gesture of goodwill and cooperation with the Earth Union, whose forces still occupy the then-unused northern terminus.

Bar-Kemal’s security checkpoint totally encompasses the tunnel’s entrance, turning the entryway into a fortified military base with staggered lines of defenses pointed inland. The military base itself occupies a section of reclaimed land along the Bay of Ceuta, with the reopened part of the tunnel forming part of the installation’s foundation. To this end, the base forms something of a squared U-shape, with the open portion of the tunnel entrance flanked by gun emplacements. The base’s hangar buildings, formed of dense bomb-resistant concrete and topped with a laser battery, are lined up on the north end of the reclaimed land and form the northern perimeter of the base. As the tunnel is large enough to accommodate a mobile suit, a number of machine guns are positioned in the walls and ceiling of the tunnel to deny entry or exit depending on the route taken.

The overall construction is relatively neat and tidy, with no extraneous facilities save for those necessary for the security of the tunnel entrance. This makes the Hercules II base essentially a purely military installation, unlike the vast majority of Bar-Kemal holdings that have some kind of industrial or resource-extraction purpose.
