Built as an artificial island just off the coast of Singapore, the Earth Union’s monstrous cosmoport complex is unquestionably the single most advanced surface-to-orbit facility on Earth, and by some analysts’ estimates could likely maintain at least two-thirds of the entire world’s trans-terrestrial commerce by itself. The Singapore base was constructed at great expense as a joint venture by both the Earth Sphere Alliance and Human Reform League, although it wasn’t finished until well after the formal founding of the Earth Union, making it almost as much of a political statement as one of necessary infrastructure.

Built on a giant strip of reclaimed land in the Singapore Strait, the cosmoport is a sprawling facility that resembles a gigantic airport save for the rows of mooring masts for Union Baikal-class cruisers and other all-environment vessels. The massive Launch Preparation and Assembly Building situated at the northern terminus of the island features a variety of rather byzantine machinery and apparatuses to load vessels and other vehicles into the base’s mass driver, which fires space-bound ships out over mainland Sumatra on their way to orbit. Due to its placement near the frontier of the Earth Union’s territorial claims, the cosmoport also has a large military garrison, and the island is very well defended via numerous weapons emplacements that are typically concealed below the surface of the landing strips.

The key to the Singapore base’s efficiency is its geographic location. Placed just about forty miles north of the Equator, this is a supremely optimal launching point for heavy payloads, with total weight allowances increased by sometimes as much as 65% over bases in Europe and North America. It is also the southernmost point in the contiguous Earth Union territory, with various lesser states and a few non-state entities just beyond in the various islands of the South Pacific – to their perspective, the massive Singapore base represents an Earth Union flag planted just across the water, an effect that many believe the Union was very much intentionally sending.
