Occupying the site of the former Maya Maya Airport, Malachim – now known as Outlying Defense Base Congo – was the base of operations of the Lord’s Revolutionary Front, a militia/quasi-guerrilla group controlling the perpetually overcrowded city of Brazzaville. The L.R.F.’s nominal objectives of purging Africa of mysticism and establishing a theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments and Congolese traditions seems to quite frequently involve terrorizing villages and ambushing South African Coalition patrols, however, necessitating the ability to service and field mobile suits. A surprise Earth Union attack pulverized much of the base’s garrison in April of UC 241, and the installation now serves as a forward combat base for Union operations in central Africa.
Malachim – presumably intended to reference the Hebrew messengers of God – was an irregular installation that clearly shows from the overall layout that it was not designed by principally military-minded architects. Much of the original airport can still be clearly made out beneath the camouflage netting and striped paint, including former parking areas and taxiways for aircraft that have now become mobile suit revetments (which double as open-air hangars of sorts). Many of these structures survived the Earth Union’s long range battleship bombardment, though they will likely be replaced by more modern facilities as more operations begin to be conducted out of the area. The L.R.F. has also deployed a large field of so-called “beam mines” made from barely functioning mobile suit reactors looted from previous battles which have been fitted with an ersatz acceleration ring such that a critical explosion caused by a proximity trigger fires a potent beam straight up through the soil and into the air. The theory is somewhat more sound than the practice, and more than a few L.R.F. soldiers were vaporized while attempting to install fresh mines. Most of the defenses installed by the L.R.F. were destroyed during the Union attack, but due to their sturdy nature the majority of the mines and other booby traps around the base’s immediate location remain intact… for better or worse.
