Akutan Island is an off-shore platform fitted with a gigantic X-band radar, providing over-the-horizon scanning for much of the northern Pacific Ocean and early warning capability for Alliance installations in Alaska and the northwest United States.

Much like Puerto Morelos Island in the Gulf of Mexico, Akutan Island is a great distance from shore and cannot be attacked from land; in this case, a lonely speck straddling Bering Sea and Pacific Ocean a good length off from the Aleutian Islands. Due to the often dangerously high winds and bitterly cold temperatures almost year-round, no Aries are stationed at Akutan Island; the entire mobile suit complement is based around the amphibious Pisces, and additional defensive emplacements are provided to make up for the lack of air protection.
