Positioned on the high Los Gatos plateau in the Sierra Madres, Torreón is a relatively new installation designed to provide regional security and defense for most of Mexico and Central America, replacing the outdated Ciudad Díaz base which had been badly damaged during the Guild offensive into North America.

With its high altitude position, Torreón is an important link in Earth Union communications in the southern United States region – in the event of disruption of satellite links, the base provides a central station in a series of repeaters that reach all the way to Galveston in the east and Fort Suvorov in the west. The base is a very compact, tidy facility, designed from the ground up around using GN-derived systems and electronics to reduce its overall personnel and infrastructure needs. To wit, it maintains an effective mobile suit garrison and a heavy defensive battery of gun emplacements without a large relative size. Mobile suit hangars line either side of the east-west airfield, with the defense coordination and command center positioned at the far western end. Beam cannon emplacements are positioned in a roughly circular pattern off the main concourse, while missile launchers are configured to appear out of sliding hatches on the tarmac. The flat expanse of the plateau around the base fits well with the Union’s highly mobile combat strategies, as it offers little cover or concealment for approaching land-based forces and plenty of maneuvering room for flying units.
