While somewhat outmoded given the Earth Union’s lack of reliance on fossil fuels, the old Human Reform League base in the Tien Shan mountains near the Sino-Kyrgyz border remains a significant strategic point due to its ability to control the handful of mountain passes leading out of western Xinjiag, as well as the abundance of rare earth metals in the area. Constructed by the League at great expense, the “investment” placed in the facility was also a significant argument towards keeping the installation online.
Lacking a suitable location to build a base above ground, the League simply shaved off the top of a mountain and constructed the installation on the plateau that was created. Additional excavation created a depression in the vague shape of a volcanic crater, allowing base infrastructure to be built below the rim of the former mountain. As a result, there is little immediate indication of the presence of the facility save for a few sensor masts and aerials poking up into the air to provide long-range scanning. Defenses are placed around the rim’s circumference in reinforced blockhouses that have been treated with an anti-beam laminate – while updated with the latest in Union GN-powered weapons, the typical construction in concealed and retractable mounts simply wasn’t feasible, resulting in the refitting of the original League fixtures. Other than the addition of a fairly short airfield complex in the center of the excavated area, much of the base remains as it did during the Guild War period, although the essentially unused trench networks on the exterior of the mountain have been filled in.
