Hercules I is the northern terminus of the Strait Tunnel connecting Spain and Morocco. Constructed during the days of the Old Earth Federation, the Strait Tunnel allows direct vehicular travel under the Mediterranean, making transit from Southern Europe to Northern Africa precipitously easier. The tunnel fortuitously survived the Interregnum, and was at one point occupied by a group of renegade pirates operating a hijacked land battleship as something of a hideout. During the early days of the Alliance, the pirates were cleared out and the tunnel reopened, but when the North African states joined in forming the Atlantic Federation, the future of the thing fell into uncertainty.

The Alliance controls the Spanish side of the tunnel, organizing its defensive program with the heavily fortified firebase at the Rock of Gibraltar. The latter has essentially been hollowed out with a virtual spiderweb of tunnels, power stations and magazines to support a host of defensive emplacements, while the former houses underground hangars and the control facility for the installation, regulating traffic coming in from Africa. The layout is similar to the Hercules II installation across the strait (referred to as Monte Hacho by the Federation), though the Alliance has not focused as much defense on the tunnel entrance itself – in case of an enemy force attempting to push up through the tunnel, the underground hangars and control center would be locked down, with the gun platforms on the Rock simply waiting to blast anything that emerged from the tunnel’s entrance.
