Formerly one of the central bastions in the Alliance’s defense against the Human Reform League, the monstrous defensive network in Warsaw became a rather embarrassing relic of a suddenly outmoded era when the League and Alliance found themselves forced to cooperate to combat the mutual threat of the Guild. In the postwar period, the strategic re-alignment of Alliance and League forces in forming the Earth Union saw much of the great defensive posturing taken during the previous years become so much useless surplus, although most of these installations ended up surviving in some form or another.
Much of the Warsaw base’s elaborate defenses were designed around the principles of static warfare and intended to combat waves of League Tierens – with the Union adopting a more mobility-oriented combat strategy, the majority of these features were dismantled, including the massive perimeter wall and the miles on miles of mines and remote sensors to the east of the metropolitan area. This region was turned over to civilian development again, curing the city’s “lopsided” distribution. The extensive tunnel and hangar complexes below ground, however, were essentially retained in much the same format as had existed during the war, with elevators allowing access to street level throughout the city’s interior. The airfield in the west remains as well, where a more visible military presence has been constructed, including a secondary command center. The Union’s GN-derived defensive emplacements, with their predisposition towards subterranean “pop-up” configurations, are particularly well suited for such an arrangement: great panels in streets or parks slide open to reveal either a launching mobile suit or a vertical missile cell, depending on the area in question. While much of the visual aspects of the fortress are no longer present, it is still very much a well-defended city, simply utilizing a less obtuse (and directionally specific) format.
