Hawaii was virtually abandoned by the Earth Federation during the Interregenum; the occupants were left to fend for themselves, and were virtually wiped out by starvation and diseases. Eventually, things started to tip the other way, and they clawed their way back from the abyss, mirroring much of humanity.

Due to it’s location, and due to means both fair and foul, Hawaii has grown into a small nation, capable of fending off other factions, at least for now. It is an important center of commerce, featuring one of the few privately owned space launch facilities in the world. Iris Corporation maintains a branch office here, along with many other companies not too keen on paying taxes to one faction or the other.

The center of government is at Pearl Harbor, an ancient naval base from even before Earth Federation times; the large number of (refitted) docking facilities and regularly dredged deep-sea channels makes it the administrative, military, and commercial center of the islands. The defense force is somewhat ramshackle, but numerous, fairly well-equipped and ready for trouble.
