Monte Hacho, known as Hercules II to the Alliance, is the southern terminus of the Strait Tunnel connecting Spain and Morocco. Constructed during the days of the Old Earth Federation, the Strait Tunnel allows direct vehicular travel under the Mediterranean, making transit from Southern Europe to Northern Africa precipitously easier. The tunnel fortuitously survived the Interregnum, and was at one point occupied by a group of renegade pirates operating a hijacked land battleship as something of a hideout. During the early days of the Alliance, the pirates were cleared out and the tunnel reopened, but when the North African states joined in forming the Atlantic Federation, the future of the thing fell into uncertainty.

An uneasy peace exists between the Alliance forces at Hercules I and the Federation forces at Monte Hacho, with neither side having a great desire to blast the other from their positions but both fully equipped to do so. The defenses at Monte Hacho fall into two distinct areas. The first, the Fortaleza de Hacho, is an ancient military fort atop the low mountain nearby, which has a commanding view over the nearby town of Cueta. The thick antique walls predate the Old Earth Federation by centuries, but remain strong and are now festooned with modern defensive emplacements. The old fort serves primarily as a heavily fortified lookout position, with command and control assets located below ground. A small concourse in the town is positioned around the entrance to the tunnel, which is both wide and tall enough to fit standard-sized mobile suits (though they are usually laid down on trucks for transit across). The main area of the base is underground, accessed from large bunker doors just beyond the tunnel’s entrance, and features defense turrets that can emerge from concealed shafts at various locations around the city (a few machine guns are explicitly designed to emerge from the tunnel walls to discourage armed forces from trying to force an entry through from the other side.

Present: After an attack by a medley of rogues lead by the pilot of the F-91, Monte Hacho has lost a large portion of its static defenses. However despite these losses, the base was able to drive off the attackers, the majority of the mobile suit squads still defending the base.

A second attack planned by Shizuru Chan, with help from Victor Masada, Kale Armistad, Cielo Avari, and Darius Carver completely annihilated the base, and closing off the AF side of the tunnel.
