During the last days of ZAFT’s terrestrial combat operations, a Gondwana class landing ship, bearing a massive wave of reinforcements, was dispatched to Earth. Intended as a last-ditch effort to secure Australia against the Guild, the ship was shot down just after atmospheric re-entry and crash-landed about two hundred miles to the northeast of Perth somewhere in the Karroun Hill region. The surviving mobile suit forces were able to join the final defense at Zel’Dovich, but were ultimately unsuccessful in curbing the Guild’s advance.

Almost twenty years later, scouts belonging to the ZAFT Continuation Army re-discovered the crash site of the Gondwana, finding it to be miraculously intact – successive waves of Guild, Alliance, and Earth Union battles had not disturbed the site, and the wreck of the gigantic carrier had plowed directly into a craggy hill-filled area. The Australian desert did the rest, with the ship now simply resembling a very large rock amid many others. Continuation Army forces have occupied the crash site since then, turning the area into a clandestine base of operations with new gun turrets hauled in and disguised as terrain features while coaxing the Gondwana‘s reactors back into function to provide power for the weaponry, sensors, and linear catapults. Although the ship will most certainly never fly again, Continuation Army technicians have done a remarkable job in reconditioning many of its systems, allowing functional hangar bays to store and launch mobile suits and even bringing several of the carrier’s monstrous beam cannons back online.

Due to its remote location and excellent camouflage, the improvised base has been an excellent staging point for Continuation Army raids throughout western Australia, and later became the group’s unofficial headquarters once their membership began swelling with a wave of disaffected Coordinators from PLANT circa UC 229.
