Finding much of Australia essentially abandoned thanks to great coastal destruction during the colony drops that devastated the Old Earth Federation, the advance units of ZAFT’s Earth Liberation Army began directing their major drop operations towards the center of the continent, where they would have nearly total freedom to begin constructing major bases of operation. A large sandstone formation beyond the village of Alice Springs, which the indigenous people called “Uluru” and the white townsfolk “Ayers Rock”, promised to be a handsome location for a fortified headquarters, and giant boring machines were sent down from PLANT to begin construction.

The Earth Liberation Headquarters, named in honor of Soviet cosmologist and physicist Yakov Zel’dovich, is a heavily protected bunker complex built within the rock. Defensive emplacements peek out from reinforced positions, bristling along the surface of the thing and giving it an appearance vaguely like a squat cactus when deployed. There are multiple hardened access ports for mobile suits along the circumference of the rock, usually around particularly heavy concentrations of defenses and fitted with heavy doors to prevent undesirable access from the outside.

The network of tunnels and hangars within focus on a main shaft that allows access to the various levels below via a giant elevator, which is in turn accessed from the surface by a giant multi-layered iris port designed to withstand direct hits from high-powered beam weapons. A mass driver, accessible from the lower levels of the interior, juts out of the rock to the northwest along its longest longitudinal axis. Though the end is normally exposed out of a well-hardened tunnel mouth, it can be retracted and the tunnel sealed off with a heavy blast door during combat situations. The entire top of the rock has been smoothed down into a suitable landing surface for craft making a landing from orbit, and metallic platforms extend off a small distance beyond the natural terminus of the rock’s altitude to increase the available surface area.
