Situated in a rocky area to the northeast of the massive Hellas Impact Basin, Ares 1 is the first permanent operational facility installed on Mars since the end of the Fourth Space War. It is also one of the first such establishments installed by a private entity – in this instance, the much-maligned Black Dog Company.

Ares 1 is constructed primarily out of prefabricated components hauled in from Earth aboard Black Dog military vessels, and shows a fairly cookie-cutter appearance with a small spaceport complex and mobile suit hangars dominating the surface – a power plant and a central command center occupy the rest of the complex, which has a few outlying sensor masts primarily designed to facilitate radio communication during nasty magnetic storms that roll through Mars’ southern hemisphere fairly often.

What purpose the installation will serve in the future remains to be seen, but it can now be argued that, if nothing else, mankind has planted the flag on the red planet again.
