Perhaps the largest and most in-depth of the Alliance’s static forts intended to thwart the advance of the Human Reform League, the incredible defense line known as Mannerheim’s Bolt was also likely the largest piece of functionally useless hardware in the post-Guild War period, since the League and Alliance were now mutual partners in forming the Earth Union. Unlike some of the other military garrisons along this now-nonexistent front, the extensive line through Finland was an unjustifiable cost and dismantled by the end of UC 227. In place of the extensive series of forts, a single air base was erected on the opposite bank of the Saimaa Canal outside the city of Varkaus to provide local defense and protection for the general Scandinavia area.

Constructed as a oblong and roughly rectangular shape bordering the canal, the Varkaus’ base is relatively “pedestrian” in nature. The airfield’s twin runways run parallel to the canal, with hangars positioned on the eastern side while the defense coordination and command center is set up at the southern end. Interestingly, there is no barracks complex at the base – housing of the installation’s enlisted personnel is provided in town via a pay allowance for private housing, while the base’s officers live in a small gated community a few miles to the south. Defensive emplacements are concealed in retractable mountings along the western perimeter of the base, while a few are also positioned in the low hill to the east to provide greater line-of-sight.
