Falun is a giant orbital dock yard operated by Helwan Mechano-Industries which is intended to be used for large-scale ship construction, maintenance, and refitting. The yard was first deployed in the mid-UC 220s immediately after the end of the Space War, primarily using salvaged colony debris from the nearby L1 shoal zone, and takes the form of a large ribcage-like structure roughly five kilometers long. A battery of massive overhead cranes and manipulator armatures allow very large ship components to be harnessed and maneuvered into position for assembly or removal, and a drydocked vessel can be slowly moved from one end of the yard to the other in an assembly line-style fashion.
While most of the dock yard is essentially open space, there are a number of large mechanical/industrial blocks along the length of the structure which are used to fabricate and repair components and systems, as well as a fairly large habitation and administrative block at the eastern end of the structure. This area includes the support facilities for Falun’s security detachment, including hangars for a mobile suit garrison, and the yard itself features a number of missile batteries for defense against space debris as well as raiders or other hostile forces.
Falun is usually parked in a stable orbit above Helwan’s main base at Port Zeeman, allowing hardware and supplies to be easily transited between the lunar surface and the orbiting facility. The yard does not have any motive power sources of its own – if the yard needs to be moved, ships are sent up to slowly tow it to a more preferable location. Likewise, there are no integrated power plants as abundant electrical power can be beamed up via a microwave relay from Port Zeeman.
