Fort Suvorov is a totally modern installation constructed by the Earth Union as something of a successor to the Alliance’s New Edwards base and the Guild’s North American headquarters in Las Vegas. Located along the arid Nevada coastline just across from the Spring Mountains, the base houses both a large dock complex and a fully equipped Cosmoport with space control and communications facilities. Combined with the Fort Vought base in Washington, Fort Suvorov provides effective territorial command and control over the west coast of the United States. The installation is named after former mobile suit instructor and the only four-time awarded Hero of the Earth Union Andrei Suvorov, whose feats of bravery during the Guild campaign in North America have been credited by some analysts as having helped prevent total routing of the Alliance military during the sudden breakdown of the mobile doll forces.
Fort Suvorov is a relatively oblong installation hugging Pahrump Bay, and is a typical design of modern Union tactical assessments favoring mobility-oriented battles. The Cosmoport is positioned on a long stretch of reclaimed land that juts out into the bay, allowing for botched landing attempts to be directed towards water instead of the mountains, while hangar bays for mobile suits are positioned below ground with elevators providing immediate access to the airfield in the event of enemy attack. Defensive emplacements are positioned at regular intervals throughout the base proper in order to facilitate a flexible defense towards attacks from any direction, with a number of very large bunkers positioned in the mountains that the base abuts to the east – these positions provide ample height to attack targets far out to sea or approaching from inland, but may be fired down into the base proper for point defense if necessary. Sophisticated sensor aerials positioned in the southern end of the base permit long-range scanning and are used to coordinate Union naval vessels in the Pacific as well as to provide for early warning of enemy forces.
Due to the base’s close proximity to Las Vegas, a short drive over the Spring Mountains, it is a popular posting for many Union personnel. It is also a relatively short distance from the former site of the Alliance’s New Edwards base at Groom Lake, where a war memorial
