The Earth Union’s Ponizovje base is the most extreme north installation on any main continent, and acts as something of a “sister facility” to the Amundsen base on the other side of the North Pole. Ponizovje was originally a Human Reform League listening and surveillance post lacking even a mobile suit garrison, but was significantly expanded in the early strategic reinforcement operations carried out by the Earth Union.
The base is situated a few miles inland from Anabar Bay, bordering a glacier to the west and miles of barren wilderness to the south and east. A number of strange-looking antennas and other aerials grace the various structures, many of them being old holdovers from the base’s League construction and no longer in active use. The base also has no main concourse, with an airfield constructed in the northern portion and a relatively “amoebic” overall layout with warehouses, administrative and barracks buildings, and other fixtures placed about in a seemingly random arrangement. Spacing of structures permits easy mobility of mobile suits due to the wide gaps between them in most cases, and modern sensor masts atop the nearby glacier, in tandem operation with some of the original League scanners, maintains a watchful eye across the tundra in the surrounding area.
Mobile suit support facilities have been constructed below ground, although the extent of these is unknown to outside observers.
