Name: Ando Shoji ("Sho")
Age: 21 (DOB UC 0058.07.31)
Astrological Sign: Leo
Rank: 1st Lieutenant (O-2)
Faction: Officer Korps
Division: Terrestrial Assault Force
Equipment: Shin Zaku II
Eyes: Green
Hair: Black
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 165 lbs.
History:
Ando Shoji grew up mostly unnoticed on a colony in Side 3. His early life was unremarkable - he did well in school, his parents and family consistently provided a strong support structure, and he enjoyed the company of plenty of friends as he grew older. Blissfully unaware of the future, Shoji was truly happy.
In the aftermath of the Riah Revolution in UC 0077, Shoji and several of his friends enlisted with the Zeon Military Force at the age of 18 following a resurgent wave of national pride in Side 3. Shoji initially showed promise in tests for piloting capability, but his growth became stunted due to the lack of live-fire exercises. Without any advanced scenarios to apply his training to, he was seemingly destined for a rear vanguard assignment at Side 3, potentially never to see combat.
However, Shoji and his friends were unexpectedly transferred to the ZMF 1st Combined Fleet in UC 0079. It was while stationed there that he took place in the Battle of Lourm, and forced to watch all of his friends die one by one. Shoji barely survived himself, and was recovered in an unrecognizably bloody, catatonic state.
Shoji spent the next few months at various hospitals and medical centers (including more than a few psychiatric wards) attempting to recover. When he finally emerged, it was as if he was a completely different person. Simulations conducted during his rehabilitation indicated that his affinity for mobile suits was much higher than before the Lourm Campaign, as well as his grasp of battlefield tactics. The ZMF and his doctors were very pleased with his progress.
Unfortunately, subsequent psychological profiles also indicated he demonstrated warning signs for several mental disorders, including multiple personality disorder and bipolar disorder. Apparently, the last few months had been a chrysalis from which he emerged as a much more capable (and extremely unstable) individual.
In need of veterans for the upcoming Earth campaign, his superiors overlooked the footnotes on his mental evaluation, and recommissioned him as an officer in the Terrestrial Assault Force. Assigned as a 2nd Lieutenant, he was among the soldiers in the 4th Terrestrial Mobile Division that dropped to Earth on 0079.03.18 and landed in eastern Asia.
Personality:
Following his encounters in the Battle of Lourm and subsequent rehabilitation, Ando Shoji now sees himself as a type of superhero - a vengeful avatar of courage and justice. He views the Earth Federation and its soldiers as a collection of fiends and demons, who exist only to enslave the innocent. To that end, Shoji considers himself and the rest of the Terrestrial Assault Force to be freedom fighters on the front lines of a conflict with evil itself, with the stakes being the future of the human race.
This aspect of his mental state exhibits itself most frequently as sheer charisma during battle. He commands those under him with force and passion, and prefers tactics that match his courage against those of the EFF. Shoji typically understands the value of a tactical retreat, but attempts to delay any attempts at such to inflict as much damage as possible to the enemy. He refuses to purposely hurt or kill any Earth civilians, as he feels like it is the responsibility of Zeon to save them from the Earth Federation.
There are of course dark sides to Shoji's psychosis. He has no qualms with indirectly endangering civilians through troop placement, to prove (if the EF disregards the lives of its citizens) that his foe is evil. He also is usually extremely harsh to prisoners of war, and will rarely give quarter to an enemy who is attempting to surrender. Indeed, his ultimate goal is for the complete annihilation of all non-Zeon military forces on Earth, in the name of Zeonic "protection" for the planet.
