Situated just on the dark side of the moon near the southern pole, Port Zeeman is the main manufacturing base of lunar industrial conglomerate Helwan Mechano-Industries. The facility is named after the large impact crater it is centered in, although only a relatively small portion of the base is above the lunar surface.
On approach to the crater, large communications antennas and a spaceport facility can be easily spotted, along with long stretches of pavement that radiate out in irregular patterns from the central compound. Docks for large spacecraft open up out of several paved areas closest to the topside complex, allowing for service to be conducted in pressurized bays. The manufacturing plants are totally subterranean, providing a high degree of protection from meteorite impacts as well as renegade attacks which are not uncommon around lunar space. A large number of gun batteries are installed in the crater walls and feature full rotation, allowing for directing fire towards approaching targets or concentrating attacks against forces that may have penetrated the crater’s perimeter.
The arrangement of the surface structures is primarily intended to facilitate weapons testing and demonstration. The open expanse of the crater can simulate combat on both a stable surface as well as open space, while having a well-defined operational zone and “backstop” in the form of the crater walls to prevent stray attacks from sailing off into parts (and potentially ships or other lunar cities) unknown. Helwan has made a small profit allowing other firms and agencies to make use of the testing grounds, and all matters of live-fire exercises between security companies, defense manufacturers and retailers, and even colonial militias occur on a fairly regular basis.
