You give him a faceful of fist and he goes down like a laffy taffy.
He's rolling around, holding his nose; neatly broken.
Grabbing the match off his belt, you strike it to your boot and light the nearest cannon to you. Due to the nature of these cannons, it seems to light them all.
The sounds rock the ship left and right, cannon balls sailing into the ocean.
The sound is almost too much to bear - you cover your ears.
The captain's ears are bleeding. He'll be dead from bloodloss soon.
They are all shot within a few minutes. Suddenly, you hear more footsteps. And.. chains? Dark shadowy figures peer at you with white eyes and teeth from the cargo bay.
Uh oh.

I grab the knife from his belt, run up on deck, and try to toss one of the barrels of taffy at the oncoming zombie horde. And look for a dinghy.

You grab the knife and head for topside.
The way is shut. It seems in all that commotion, you were surrounded by these chained shadows.
They all get down on one knee, if they have them and give you a roman salute.
"Where you wish, we will row master."
Well, that solves that.
You're the captain of a ghost ship. With taffy.
A white man is among them. He looks to be around 17.
He looks at the dying captain, and then to you - takes out a pistol and shoots the screaming taffyman.
"I shall be in your service as well, mijn Heer."
A bunch of strangers have just sworn loyalty to you.
One of them is Dutch. There's only two types of people... but alas.
Where to, mon Capitan?

"I've heard there's an excellent market for taffy in Key West! Row on, and I'll see about replacing the sails when we get there!"

"I've heard there's an excellent market for taffy in Key West! Row on, and I'll see about replacing the sails when we get there!"
The shadows all shuffle down to where they were.
Upon closer look you realize they are negroes.
Slaves.. with leprosy! You cover your mouth with your hand, then look at your hand and scream.
Somewhere, walking around the ship, you picked up a leper's hand.
It's tight grasp is hard to break, but you manage, throwing the skeletal thing to the ground.. but upon second thought you tie it to your belt.
Never know when you need a helping hand. Ba dum pssh.
---
Letting the Dutchman guide the slaves, you head up to the Captain's cabin.
Once again, you're making good speed. You should be in Key West in a few hours.
What do you do to pass the time?

I scrub my skin furiously with soap and water, then read the captain's log.

You look around the ship, now at high speed, for something to clean yourself with. There's lots and lots of taffy, cannons.. and not much else.
You root around in the Captain's cabin and find, among other things, soap!
In the kitchen, you find a pot for cooking big game. You fill it up with what you presume to be water, undress, and hop in.
You lose track of time, scrubbing yourself and getting all that salt off of you. It was only a few weeks ago that you were at home, safe in your mother's arms..
"Wreck ashore!" you hear outside.
Slipping on the Captain's fine Dutch clothes, you look out to sea. Like a proper Captain. On an empty ship.
There's a careening Man-Of-War on the beach. The men are scrambling on the shore. You check the topside cannons, and notice that the fuse has yet to be lighted on them. With the right aim, you might be able to scatter the men and take the wreck for yourself.. but how would you do it?
You thumb the match in your pocket. It looks like the Man-Of-War you were thrown out of.

I wait for a few hours to see if the men disperse. If they do, me and the men quickly scavenge the ship. If not, we continue to Key West to sell the taffy cargo.

You wait, seeing the men enter the ship, and start hauling out cargo. You didn't think there was much cargo in it, but they prove you otherwise.
The ship is mostly intact, save for a small dent. Most of the barrels are the first to go.
Then, the nails.
Then the frame.
Soon the ship is falling apart.
Even the drift wood is carried off!
If there was a 17th century version of recycling, you just saw it.
Soon, the cargo is loaded onto dignies.. though you don't see anyone nearby.
"Hail, good sir! We're ready to load the cargo! Send down a rope!"

You send down the rope, and soon the cargo is aboard the ship.
The wreckers, though unfamiliar with the ship, come aboard and help bring it into town. The cannons are abandoned; wet cannons are no fun to lift.
The ship coming into town is a curious sight to see; all the people are gathered at the shore, amazed at the sail-less ship. In a few hundred years, it would be common place - but for now, it's a sight to see.
Children especially, are gathering beyond the port.
You dock, fumble around the jacket to find the docking pass, and the men get to work unloading the cargo to the wrecker's warehouse. As they finish, a man hands you.. 50 Sovereigns! You have discovered wrecking is a profitable business.
Key West is a small island, a single town encompasses most of it.
Where do you want to go?
Places Wrecker's Warehouse Wrecker's Court (Federal Court) Wrecker's Ice House
Duval Street (Bars, Taverns, and Whorehouses) Whitehead Street (High class restaurants, luxury shops) Caroline Street (Residential)
General Store Public Library Port authority

You start at the Wrecker's Warehouse.
Lumpers move cargo from the port to the warehouse, where a man in a top hat carefully writes down each item, and it's supposed cost.
"You there! You came in on the Taffy Princess? I trust you got your pay?"
Those sovereigns must have come from this man.
"That Man-Of-War had some high society items. Fetched a good price at the auction. Not to say we didn't have our problems..."
He gestures over to his office, where one former Captain Towns sits, shackled.
"This man here claimed the entire ship was his. Were it not for the quick workings of our men, the whole wreck might have been lost. The gall of some commoners. Probably nothing more than a pirate."
He checks some more items on his list.
"Have you come to buy or sell? If you've come for work, we're full up. The auction for that slave, the troublemaker, is tomorrow."
Wrecker's Warehouse: 50 Sovereigns: Small sloop 40 Sovereigns: A small house 30 Sovereigns: Gun special (Bandoleer, gun belt, two pistols) 20 Sovereigns: Sword special (Two scimitars, dagger, boot dagger) 10 Sovereigns: High society regalia
