Fulguratus is the on-site headquarters of the Jupiter Development Group, installed in a stable orbit around the gas giant and so named after one of the titles of the Roman God (“sender of lightning”). Technically, Fulguratus is purely a designative name for the pair of ballistically-coupled space colonies that the JDG has hauled out of the Earth sphere, which are referred to as Fulgur-1 and Fulgur-2.

Because space colonies are essentially self-sufficient due to the nature of their design, the utility of using them as a base of operations for work in and around Jupiter was obvious. Further, in the early years of planetary expeditions, the company was able to generate considerable interest among people in the immediate Earth sphere to act as new pioneers of a sort, and the company has a stable source of labor and manpower with about a hundred thousand colonists evenly divded between both cylinders. Fulguratus is also the coordination center of the company’s military arm, the Main Force Patrol, as well as where raw materials mined from Jupiter’s atmosphere and moons are processed before being packaged and shipped back to Earth.

As it is one of the few bastions of civilization outside of the Earth sphere, Fulguratus is a port of call for a variety of “stellar vagabonds” and other types that operate away from known space for protracted periods of time, and the sparsely-populated colonies are instantly popular for those seeking a semblance of normality (and gravity) after months or even years inside a space ship.
