Developed and constructed by the Atlantic Federation to control the Suez Canal, the Al-Suways base is presently under the ownership of Bar-Kemal Ltd. and serves as a crucial transportation hub. Perhaps more importantly, it also houses a large mass driver whose assembly – begun by the Federation in the early UC 210s – was completed by the Guild during their occupation of the base in UC 219. Aside from controlling shipping through the Canal, Al-Suways is also the only large space port in Africa.

The base is positioned on the Egyptian side of the Gulf of Suez, about sixty miles north of Hurghada, and is dominated by the ramp-type mass driver that climbs high above the main concourse. There is a very large dock facility that occupies several miles of coastline, with separate areas for nautical ships and space vessels – the latter are floated and ramped up into the base on gargantuan tracked vehicles to be readied for launch via the mass driver. Extensive dry docks are positioned in the south to facilitate repairs on both types of craft. Al-Suways formerly housed a number of heavy anti-orbital missile silos, but these weapons were ultimately removed by Bar-Kemal once they gained control of the base from the Human Reform League, and the reinforced launch complex is now used as a large hangar bay for mobile suits, with multiple elevators permitting access to the surface for garrisoned units.

Inland approaches to the base are covered by a small forest of turreted emplacements inside heavy blockhouses – with full 360-degree rotation, the positions are capable of creating thick overlapping kill zones. Lesser turrets, primarily for air defense, are positioned in the immediate concourse perimeter, with a few hugging the artificial harbor walls in the Gulf. In addition, a number of massive cannon batteries are built into nearly impregnable excavated bunkers in the mountains at Jabal al-Zayt – these powerful guns are aimed over the Gulf towards the Sinai, and serve as the company’s most “active” form of ensuring compliance with their terms and conditions of using the Canal – remotely activated mines in the water are used in the event of quick-moving vessels whose speed is too great to be tracked by the artillery.
