Kingdom Come, Thy Will Done by Virgil The black sihilloute of a figure took another step forward, his clear and crisp voice attempting to divert Hal and his present course of action. In pure defiance, Hal raised his arm to end it all, attempting to charge all ten GL rings to their full capacity. In just a few seconds, nothing would matter any more. * * * Paladin left his apartment, his cell phone in hand. "Hello, Hope. Its me...Paul," he said, speaking futiley into Dare's answering machine. "I just wanted to say I'm sor-" A crisp light appeared in the pale moonlight, one that shined as bright as the sun's red gleam. As the hailstorm of plasma crashed upon him, he could only think of words not spoken and opportunities lost. * * * Hal slammed his arm down in defeat. He had become many things. A liability. A rogue. A killer. But there was one thing he was not. A coward. "Who are you?" he asked the stranger weakly. As if by cue, the shadow replied. "In blackest day, in brightest light, no evil shall escape..." the stranger offered his hand. "Green Lantern's light." Hal finished, taking his hand. * * * Paladin remembered her salty lips. He remembered her wild green eyes whisked astray by her golden red hair streaming down her face. But he never thought he would see her again. That was then. This is now. She stood in front of him, a warm and gentle smile appearing upon her face. The gleam of her Cosmic Rod outlined the shield that had protected...and as much as Paladin did not want to admit it...saved his life. "Hope, I..." he began but Dare put her finger to his mouth. "Don't talk." she said as he felt her warm body against his own in what could be one last embrace. Below him he spied Renee Montoya and Harvey Bullock leading a group of GCPD's, at their side flanked several Judges lead by Crispis as well. Their Headquarters was demolished. Their Charter revoked. But that would not stop them. Not now. Not ever. "Give me a object count!" Montoya ordered, looking at glimmering lights several hundred feet above them. "Hmm," Crispis smirked as he looked at the read-out. "How fitting." "What?" Montoya asked. "The number of the Beast," Crispis quoted in response. "Six hundred and sixty six, all Prime Vedit Sentinels." "Lock and load, boys!" Bullock cocked his shotgun. "This is it!" As they ended their embrace, the two lovers drew back. Paladin gathered what few true firearms he had, Dare channeled the power through her star staff, generating a shield around both of them. Without hesistation, she propelled them towards the oncoming threat. * * * Eric Draven had no trouble when the Sentinels landed. As a shotgun shell carrened directly with one Sentinel's head, he finished the job with a slash to the mid-section, ripping the robot asunder. Plasma jacketed steel did little to Eric Draven. Neither of the attackers suspected the source of Draven's power was the Crow perched a few yards behind him. Invincble as long as this remained a secret, Draven was able to continue his crusade unhindered. Two enemies a night before, both saw the necessity of their actions now. The Sentinels were quickly tossed aside like turnpins in a howl of rage, and then slashed apart like cardboard once again. In the moonlight, one berserker and one monster tore through the endless ranks, the heat of battle dripping from their skin. "BANNER SMASH ROCK-EM SOCK-EM ROBOT! BAD ROBO!" Hulk raged as he plummeted another to the ground below. As Wolverine cut the remaining of life out of the Sentinel, he noticed it was not gettin any easier. For with each Sentinel destroyed, the combat experience of that disabled unit was transferred to the other six hundred and sixty. Spawn landed upon the Sentinel's bolbous head, his chains rattling as they dug into the metallic body beneath. Several nearby Sentinels opened fire, destroying the Sentinel, as Simmons intended. With a rage of hellfire, he eradicated the first Sentinel and launched a fury of plasma fire into the second. As he did though, he could not help but feel a kin to each Sentinel, built like he, to be a perfect weapon. Spiderman did not worry about the Sentienls overhead. Instead, his only worry was the people below. Webbing launched from both launchers, keeping up every falling debree as it crumpled to the ground, preserving the lifes of those he felt his responsibility was most owed. With a cadre of bloodsuckers behind him, Blade leapt across the concrete ravine, his sword tucked behind his trenchcoat. But his alliance with the vampire as well as he noticing of the world events was far too late. Plasma laser fire had just the same effect as sunlight, as the vampires learned, their ranks immediately erradicated. Several high-powered bullets rang out as well, gunning down the Daywalker after a few succesful blocks of his sword. As his hybrid blood drained out of his body, Blade became the first metahuman casualty into the final battle. But he would not be the last. Reunited with Jade, John and Alan, GL Kyle Raynar rang out with rage and fury as his emerald Sentinels generated by the Ioan ring blasted through Sentinel after Sentinel. It was a way for Kyle to work off the anger of his last confrontation with Hal. As the attacking Sentinels blasted each other by mistake, Kyle's allies noticed his emeralde Sentinels were beginning to become indistinguishable from the real thing. Biohazard crashed the party with a gust of super speed followed by a trail of highly concentrated sulfuric acid. But it was his mistake, as he found the Sentinels were mostly resistant to such forms of chemical warfare. It was a pity that Biohazard did not fare so well as the Sentinel's giant leg stomped down upon him mercilessly. The mages of Ultrapolis quickly reigned their own attacks upon the Sentinels. Wizard's gale force hurricanes sent several Sentinels spiraling back into the rippling effect of a storm. Just as the Sentinels "learned" to brace themselves against such attacks, they were immediately disrupted as Zabulkev's alchemy changed their molecular structure and Lady Death's fire blast ripped into their no-longer-heat-resistant interior. The Jade Dragon leapt into the foray heroically. But as soon as the martial artist discovered his fist and feet of fury were of little help in this situation, he did what most organisms did, adapting to the blows. And as his Dragon form cut through the Sentinels with its razor-sharp claws and teeth, it stopped to admire a "Reign of Fire" poster before blissfully continuing its assualt. "Nothing prances like a po-" Space Ghost began, before a humanoid praying mantis leapt out and began spraying space rays into the approaching Sentinels. Suddenly a blast from a power band crashed right into Zorak himself. "Don't. Interrupt. Me." Space Ghost spat. "Resistance is fut-" came a humming metallic voice behind him. "Don't think that doesn't go for you too!" Space Ghost spun around and blasted the machine into oblivion. Pitt felt the adrenaline creep up his muscle-surging form. As his bicepts rippled, Pitt leapt directly into the horde of Sentinels approaching. They were man-machines, the same as weapons like guns and knives. Only bigger. But guns could not hurt Pitt. As he pushed his adrenaline powers to new heights however, the answer came to him. His heart rate beated out of control. Crashing to the ground, the Sentinels ignored the literally heart-broken creature at their feet, the victim of a heart attack. It was the turning point of the battle, as two powerful forces interrupted completely unexpected. Shards of metallic debree rose from the ground, fashioned into a jagged spear that severed the Sentinel's control unit. Eric Lensherr, the mutant know as Magneto, damned the Sentinel's plastic composite armor units, just as Victor Von Doom sent technomagic energy blast carrening into a few more Sentinels, each of whom exploded upon contact. Unlike many other metahumans, hero and villian alike, Clayface had no intention of fighting. He would flee the city, pray of town to town, and continue his feast of criminal intent. But unfortunately a Sentinel stood in his way. Clayface formed tendrils that ripped the Sentinel's CPU straight out of its body. Unfortunately, he left himself wide open from an attack from behind. The first plasma blast hardened Clayface's skin, the second smashed him into thousands of pieces. The third, for good measure, incincerated him entirely. This was not exactly Deadpool's idea of a good summer. Following his escape from Creed, he was realizing it probably wasn't the best idea to leave Bullseye behind like that, but seeing as how he needed all the help he could get. Still, Deadpool spared to expense and he gunned down Sentinel after Sentinel, and Deadpool also never held back on the one-liners. One second before its destruction, a Sentinel looked upon Deadpool curiously when he made a reference to Al Gore. Perhaps he wasn't so far from the truth after all. Mimic's powers suceeded in defeating ten Sentinels, an admirable feat given his control over his powers. But sadly, he perished into the crossfire of Sentinels and mad-cap mercernaries that never shut up. There was a burst of light suddenly, and several mutant leapt into the scernario. As nomads, they were always ready for what appeared on the other side of the gates they traveled. In this case, that also went for mad-cap shape-shifters who also wouldn't shut up. This was one of those times. They were the Exiles, several alternate reality mutants who traveled through time and space in their voyage home. One of their number was a lanky man with blonde hair and a beard. He ripped through the Sentinels with speed and grace, as well as care for his team-mates. The twenty or so powers from which he "bowered" from mutants also helped a bit as well. His name was Mimic. * * * |
Dignity was only an issue in death, but not for those who were still fighting. That was the case with Jin, running out of the nearest health spa with a towel tied around his waist. He mimiced the first Sentinel's firing postion, able to spot the trajectory and dodge the the projectiles perfectly. Dodging several more rapid fire blasts, Jin watched as the blast crashed right into the original Sentinel, the problem with boomerang weapons. Jin considering taking up the crusade again, but decided to do so...after he relieved some tension in his back. Adam Warlock was a cosmic being, the affairs of these beings concerned him now. That's what he kept tell himself, even after the he scorched the Sentinels away with his energy blasts and right up until the time he died saving several refugees from the kill zone. Although their differences were hardly resolved, Jay and Silent Bob did conclude Franklin Richards was not the one responsible for the disaster as soon as the Sentinels began opening fire upon him. Donning their Bluntman and Chronic uniforms, the two wielded their Jedi-rip-off lightsabers, cutting down the Sentinels in their wake. Franklin Richards backed them up, using his pre-cog powers and psionic blasts to cut down several Sentinels as well. Franklin smirked as he wondered what his mother's reaction would be to his newfound friends. He quickly put that thought out of mind, asking the two stoners to "pass the dubie." Cable released his technovirus with devastating results among the Sentinels. They were designed with the most top-level anti-virus systems, and literally tore themselves asunder fighting the virus. With this new-found feeling of balence, Cable quickly used it to harness both his own latent psionic powers and gun mastery to his fullest degree, taking down Sentinel after Sentinel. Havok joined his side as well, the mutant uncle finding it hard to resist Magneto's recent acolyte Lorna as the fight continued. But his cosmic blasts put his doubts aside, creating a devastating ripple that sprang upon the nearest Sentinel. Kurt Wagner and Remy LeBreau were not fully recovered from their last battle with Sinister, but it didn't matter. Their mind was on the matter at hand, never the expense of the past. Nightcrawler lead an acrobatic series of teleports that lent through several Sentinels, while Gambit's cards covered his tailed rear. Loki and Bartebly let fly their flaming swords of wrath. It was not since the Morning Star led his uprising that they had this much fun. Supergirl joined Bartebly's side, still maintaining that she was merely 'concerned' about Bartebly, while Angela joined Loki's side, no secret in her intentions with Loki. It was not exactly a good day for speeders. Biohazard was already one of the first to die, as Flash accessed his speed force to gain the full perspective of the battle before him. Shadow and Sonic cut through the Sentinels bit by bit like twin buzzsaws through wood, but didn't count on the adaptive Sentinel homing missles. Flash yelled in fury as the two hedgehogs were completely engulfed in an explosion. Rushing forward, the Flash called upon the Speed Force entirely, phasing a circle of Sentinels in one second. Before it could register on their sensors, thirty Sentinels bit the dust. That was all the fighting Wally West did that night. He left for Linda shortly thereafter. The gunshots of Specter Assasin rang out, blasting through the Sentinel's visual sensors and leaving Specter to toy with the Sentinel's targeting system until he was suitably bored. Satan's Rage commanded a powerful blast of fuirious hellfire likened back to his days of Inferno. The fire cosumed Sentinels in ways no Earth-fire could. However, inspired by this feat, metahuman Acetlane took the stage and blew rings of fire into the Sentinel's path. The Sentinel kept coming, kept firing, and passed both the rings of fire and Acetlane's slumped corpse without any worry at all. Superman was overwhelmed by the Sentinels. At every turn, they were locked onto his every move. He could feel the Kryptonite resounding within the Sentinels. Medieval Spawn launched to Superman's aid. Giving the last of his Hellspawn energy, he was quickly rippled apart by the laser fire, but not before giving Surpreme an opening. Launching himself into speeds exceeding levels known to man, Surpeme flashed past Superman and the encrouching Sentinels, fooling their sensors. Superman watched as the Sentinels followed the hero into the highest levels of the atmosphere. Superman heard several collosal blows, followed by twin explosions. The Sentinels were gone. But so was Surpreme, one more casualty of this war. Jet's kick landed upon the Sentinel, who turned an incinerated the threat without a second look. The deaths of heroes so uneventfully frusterated Gargoyle, who screamed with rage as he blasted one Sentinel to pieces with his stone beams, firing upon the rest with his firearms. Bishop had no trouble taking whatever the Sentinels dished out. He was surprised who ineffectual these things were when put up against their own munnitions. Several explosive batarangs engulfed another Sentinel in flame, as Batman Beyond revealed himself behind Bishop. Omniously, Batman Beyond pointed to a wreakage of debree and what appeared to be glass. The two heroes looked over the remains of a shattered Sentinel, but Bishop quickly turned away with tears in his eyes. An X-Man had followed to bring the Sentinel down. Iceman had completely overexerted himself in his efforts. Scarlet Spider's impact webbing crashed down upon the Sentinels, who once downed served as shields against remaing debree and scrapnel. Kaine shoved him out of the way of yet another explosion. The two glared at each other for a few awkward moments, before Kaine took off into the distance. As Scarlet Spider regarded his brother, he continued his work to aid the survivors. Iron Fist bashed into his arms into the Sentinel's legs. Unfortunately, he had only succeeded in activiting the Scorch Earth policies, as twice as many weapons began firing in all directions, killing Danny in seconds flat. The Sentinels really didn't have a clue on what to make of the hostile known as the Flaming Carrot. Even after the attack, people would debate the existance of the being, even though Sentinel wreakage clearing displays both burn marks and recordings of unmistakeable ranting. Jason Machandale was a mercernary, true, but he was far from a fool. He knew the line between massacre and war, and how the latter was better for business than the other. His Jack O' Lanterns bombs were set on a distinct timer, some exploding upon impact while other so-called "duds" exploded just as they hit the Sentinel's feet. In the distance he caught a glimpse of Daredevil, who swung away with a nod to Hobgoblin, a sort of mutual respect, but not for a minute longer. As Batman's forces entered the foray, they entered at alarming speeds while their enemies responding with slothful reactions. This first blood was far from coincidence, as Dreamscape exerted all of his power to his highest degree to slow down time for his foes and speed it up for his allies. The Sentinels were brought down, in one final hail, by one of the most powerful armies known to man: the People. Iron Man paved the way, blasting aside the already-worn Sentinels, as every metahuman, Special and mutant in the city of Ultrapolis lead one last ditch effort (caught on camera by Al Kraven). It was far from a last ditch effort, however, for it was a coupe de grace. * * * |
